Sunday

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. – Jackie Alley and Al Omond made it two in a row taking wins this weekend at the NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northwest Thunderfest event at Spokane County Raceway.  Both drivers won the last Northwest Divisional event at Mission Raceway Park.

Alley, the defending NHRA Lucas Oil Series National Champion, beat fellow Idaho racer Butch Walsh in a battle of Camaros for the Super Stock title.  Alley, Eagle, Idaho, went 9.736 seconds at 130.79 mph for the win with Walsh, Firth, Idaho, crossing the finish line in 10.278 seconds.

Omond out of Surrey, B.C., ran down Jon Jenkins, Richmond, B.C., on his ’97 Kawasaki in the Sportsman Motorcycle series presented by Harley Davidson.  Omond went 150.75 mph in 8.136 seconds for the win.

Aaron Strong, Auburn, Wash., used a slight starting line advantage and held on for the win in Comp Eliminator over Pat Byron, Hoquiam, Wash., in his ’05 cavalier.  Strong clocked in at 8.478, 160.65 mph.

Barry Daniluk added to his collection of NHRA Wally trophies in Top Sportsman while Scott Hearn picked up his first in Top Dragster.  Daniluk, Red Deer, Alb., outran Tom Burke, Selah, Wash., in his ’68 Camaro at 6.645, 184.72 mph and Hearn, Sherwood Park, Alb., beat Clint Geise, Renton, Wash., with a lap of 7.665, 159.32 mph.

Crowd favorite Jim Mantle driving a ’79 Pacer in Stock Eliminator took out Mike Hering, Boise, Idaho, with a final round lap of 14.503 seconds at 91.02 mph to the hard charging Hering coming in at 10.638, 118.82.

The NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series was also in action this weekend at Spokane County Raceway with Jim Young taking his second win of the season in defeating Tony Bartone, Long Island, N.Y.  Young, Salem, Wis., ran strong all day with a 5.658 second, 259.66 mph lap in the final to Bartone’s 5.889, 216.19.  Young also won the season opener March Meet at Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

Rounding out the winners this weekend were Ty Anderson, Vancouver, Wash., in a great race with Scott Taylor in Super Comp; Eddy Plaizier, in Super Gas over Steve Apted; Becky Lindsey, Puyallup, Wash., who beat Dwaine Ringguth in Super Street; Keri Ebertz in Super Pro over Leroy Carnes, Spokane, Wash.; and Jim Bonner, Deer Park, Wash., over Todd Haste, Kennewick, Wash., in Pro.

Saturday

Airway Heights, Wash. – Day two is complete and the fields have been set for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series classes. The event is the third of six in the Northwest Division with racers earning points toward both national and divisional championships along with their share of the event purse and contingency money.

Friday

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. – Racing kicked off today for the NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northwest Thunderfest at Spokane County Raceway with nearly 400 racers in nine classes expected to battle the quarter mile this weekend. 

Racers in Comp Eliminator took to the track today for two qualifying session along with Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes.  All three classes will have a final qualifying session on Saturday, setting the fields for Sunday’s eliminations.  Highlighting the event, and Saturday night’s show is the NHRA Heritage Series Nostalgia Top Fuel class and the alcohol funny cars that qualified today and will run elimination rounds on Saturday 4, 6, and 10 p.m.

Gates open at 9 a.m. on Saturday along with final qualifying and time trials.  Tickets are $23 Saturday and $18 Sunday.  Children 6-15 are just $5 and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County Raceway will host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series June 22-24, 2012. The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event is one of 43 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. The Northwest Division’s Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event along with the crowd favorite alcohol funny cars and Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragsters of the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series.

Gates at Spokane County Raceway open at noon on Friday, 9 a.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Qualifying and time trials are Friday at noon and Saturday at 9 a.m. Alcohol Funny Cars and Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster will have two qualifying sessions on Friday, at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., and will run all three elimination sessions on Saturday, at 4, 7 and 10 p.m. Comp will qualify Friday at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Eliminations resume Sunday at 9 a.m.

Spectator tickets for the Spokane County Raceway event are $18 Friday, $23 Saturday and $18 Sunday. Children six to 12 are $5 each day. Children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2012 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2012 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2012 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division’s team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2012 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA’s Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions’ purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.

TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES: The Northwest Division Top Sportsman Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the Northwest division’s Top Sportsman class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $3,500 champions’ purse will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

NORTHWEST DIVISION TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: The Northwest Division Top Dragster Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the Northwest division’s Top Dragster class to earn points toward divisional championships.
