Sunday

WOODBURN, Ore. – In the final results from Woodburn Dragstrip and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Garrett Bateman, Albany, Ore., and Steve Gasparrelli, West Covina, Calif., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Bateman, who has four career wins and two runner-ups, worked his way through the field and ran 5.225 seconds at 272.31 mph in his final round victory over local racer Joey Severance of Woodburn, who clocked in at 5.264 seconds, 266.11 mph. Bateman was off the line first and powered down the track to run his quickest and fastest pass of the weekend in the win. Severance also had his best pass of the weekend, but couldn't make up for the starting line advantage of Bateman. Severance made his fifth divisional final of 2015, with four wins and one runner-up, including a win at Woodburn earlier this year.

Gasparrelli faced off against Annie Whiteley, Grand Junction, Colo., and posted a winning run of 5.632 seconds, 260.26 mph in his ’15 Camaro. Whiteley drove a 5.600 second, 264.08 mph lap for her runner up finish in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Gasparrelli had a big starting line advantage and held off a quicker Whiteley for the holeshot win. Whiteley won in Woodburn earlier this year, and has ten career wins and three runner-ups. Gasparrelli has twenty wins and eighteen runner-up finishes, as far back as 1999. His last win was in 2013 at Mission Raceway in British Colombia.

Brandon Huhtala, Puyallup, Wash., picked up his fourth career win in Comp taking out local racer Brian Hyerstay, Eugene, Ore. Huhtala, who won at Woodburn in 2013, went 7.260 at 189.27 mph to Hyerstays 9.033 second pass at 141.28 mph.

Additional racers in the winner’s circle were Jim Isherwood, Mission, B.C., who earned his first win this season in Super Stock; Dave Jung, Surrey, B.C., won in Stock Eliminator; Chris Cannon, Bothell, Wash., in Super Gas; Josh Dalrymple, Sunnyside, Wash., in Super Street; and Mike Shannon, Kelowna, B.C., added another win to his collection, making it seven career wins in Super Comp.

In the Northwest division’s RH Racecars Top Sportsman series it was Don Sefton, Port Orchard, Wash., taking the win while Andy Morris, Olympia, Wash., won in the Rig Rentals Top Dragster Series. Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley-Davidson also competed in this event and Ted Brown, Beaverton, Ore., took home the win.

In the Summit E.T. series races Kirby Olmsted, McMinnville, Ore., took home the trophy for Super Pro; Steve Stuart won Pro ET; and Gary Howe Jr., Gig Harbor, Wash., took home the win in Sportsman ET.

This was the final event for the Northwest division. Racers can continue to race in other divisions and continue gaining points for the divisional, regional, and national points championships.
